128: The Biggest Instagram Mistake That's Repelling Your Dream Clients (Part 3)

Have you ever spent 20 minutes writing the perfect Instagram caption, carefully choosing every word, making sure you sounded knowledgeable, only to post it and hear crickets?

Then five minutes later, someone posts a reel that feels almost ridiculously simple, and somehow it takes off. People are commenting, sharing it, booking with them. And you find yourself wondering: how is that content outperforming mine? Mine is so much more valuable.

After coaching hundreds of entrepreneurs across dozens of industries, I've noticed something fascinating — the people with the most expertise are often the ones who struggle the most to communicate it. Not because they aren't brilliant, but because they've forgotten what it feels like to not know what they know. Today I'm sharing the story of my Hot Reels client Christa Rypins, and the messaging shift that completely changed how she creates content.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

  • 07:28 What the "curse of expertise" is and why the more experience you have, the more likely you are to fall into this trap

  • 10:55 Why people don't hire the smartest expert

  • 12:16 Meet Christa Rypins: chronic pain specialist, Hot Reels client, and the messaging shift that changed everything

  • 18:23 Why bite-sized educational tips aren't enough and the courage it takes to speak to the problem instead of the solution

  • 21:14 Your homework: how to find your next five hooks using the exact words of your ideal client

  • 25:45 The client who quietly watched Christa's content for months and what finally made her hire

  • 33:27 Three lessons to take away from Christa's story

S3 Ep128 Transcript - The Biggest Instagram Mistake That's Repelling Your Dream Clients (Part 3)

00:00

Have you ever spent 20 minutes writing the perfect Instagram caption or carefully choosing every word for your hook, making sure you sounded knowledgeable, only to post it and hear crickets? Then five minutes later, you open Instagram and someone posts a reel that feels almost ridiculously simple. And somehow that video takes off. People are commenting, sharing it, saving it, booking with them.

00:24

And you find yourself wondering, wait, how is that content outperforming mine? Mine is so much more valuable. If you've ever had that thought, today's episode is for you because after coaching hundreds of entrepreneurs across dozens of different industries, I've noticed something really fascinating. And that is that the people with the most expertise or experience in their business with their products or service are often the people who struggle the most to communicate it.

00:54

And it's not because they aren't brilliant, but it's because they've forgotten what it feels like to not know what they know. And today I wanna show you why that matters. Because your dream client or customer isn't listening to your content through the ears of an expert or where you are at today. They're listening through the ears of someone who's overwhelmed or confused or frustrated.

01:23

and desperately hoping someone understands what they're experiencing. So if your content is speaking over their head instead of into their heart, they're gonna keep scrolling. Not because they don't need your help, but because they don't realize you're talking to them. And that's why today I wanted to share the story of one of my Hot Reels clients, Krista Rippins. When Krista first joined Hot Reels, she wasn't struggling because she wasn't an expert. She had spent decades mastering her craft.

01:53

She had transformed people's lives. She had had an incredible online offer. But what she struggled with was translating all of that expertise into marketing that makes people stop scrolling and think, wait, she understands exactly what I'm dealing with and I want to work with her. The shift she made completely changed how she creates content today. And honestly, it's one of the biggest messaging lessons I've ever taught inside of Hot Reels.

02:23

and I cannot wait to share it with you today so you can go and run with it too. I hope you're excited. Let's go.

02:34

Welcome to Strut It, a podcast about creating bold visibility on social media with zero apologies. I'm Elizabeth Marberry, your host and Instagram marketing coach. I help small business owners get seen on Instagram and monetize their offers so they can make more money doing their sole led work. If you're tired of spinning your wheels on Instagram and you're seeking simple, proven Instagram marketing strategies that actually work, you're in the right place.

03:03

Let's dive in.

03:13

Welcome back to the show. As always, thank you so much for hanging out with me today. My goal every single week is to simplify Instagram marketing so you can spend less time wondering what the heck should I post on Instagram this week and more time building a business you genuinely love. If you've been listening to this five part series, welcome back. And if today's your first episode, I'm so glad you're here.

03:39

What I will say is this series really does build on itself. So if you have a moment, you can go back and listen to the last two weeks. In part one, we talked about consistency, not because consistency magically creates sales, but because you have to stay in the Instagram game long enough to become good at social media marketing. Then last week in part two, we talked about strategy and we explored

04:09

the fact that every piece of content needs to have a clear job. And some of your content exists to help new people discover you and your brand. Some of your content will build and deepen that trust with your existing followers, your existing community and really foster deeper connections. Some of your content will start conversations or

04:37

grow your email list and drive actual leads to your DMs. And some of your content can quite literally drive sales. So when every piece of content has one clear objective, your marketing becomes so much more intentional and actually simpler. And that's really how I design my content strategy. And that's what I teach my clients inside of HotRails, my 12 month Instagram content lab, which I'm gonna be talking about.

05:06

throughout the series and really whether you decide to join Hot Reels or not, whether you hire me as your mentor and coach or not, my goal is that as I'm sharing these client stories, you will see yourself in their journey and you will learn really how they overcame that obstacle. So whether you hire me or not, you will walk away knowing your exact next right step to take this week.

05:36

course, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want you to hop in Hot Reels if it felt aligned for you and your business. We are opening the doors to Hot Reels, which is my high touch group coaching program on August 17th. And right now, the only thing you need to do if you're interested is join our VIP wait list. It takes less than 30 seconds to join and you can head on over to elizabethmarberry.com slash hot.

06:05

to join the wait list, that's Elizabeth Marberry, M-A-R-B-E-R-R-Y.com slash hot. And it will take you 30 seconds. You put your name, your email, bam, you're on my VIP wait list. Why you wanna do that is that the doors open to the wait list first before they open up publicly. This year I'm throwing in a killer private coaching bonus that's worth over $500 with me.

06:31

It is a really sexy bonus and it will really help to rocket ship you into a hot real. So you're going to get the best ROI out of your time, your energy, your resources, all of that. So make sure you join the wait list. And if you're not already following me on Instagram, make sure you're doing that. Give me a follow over there at Elizabeth Marbury and you can send me the keyword hot. You can DM me the keyword hot H O T and my robot assistant will send you the link.

07:01

to join the wait list, get your cute butt on there because I'm telling you, if you're not already ready by the end of today's episode, you're gonna be ready to get on the wait list. So just pause, go do it and come right back. But today I wanna talk about something that quietly sabotages so many brilliant business owners. And honestly, it's one of the hardest things to recognize in yourself. I know because I too can struggle with this from time to time.

07:28

And that's why I can help shortcut this learning curve for you because I've made all the mistakes you don't have to. But really what it boils down to is the more expertise you have, the more likely you are to fall into this trap. And it's what I call the curse of expertise, which sounds horrible, but hang with me. So when you have been doing something for years, let's say, you know, for me,

07:57

I've had my brick and mortar service-based dance studio business for 16 years. Or Krista, one of my clients that you're going to hear from in a minute, she has been serving people for decades. When you have a lot of experience in what you do, even if it's like five years of experience, there's no right or wrong number here. But all of us as small business owners and entrepreneurs who have products or services that we are wanting to sell,

08:27

These products or services are offering a solution to our ideal clients or customers. They're solving a problem. And it's easy to operate when it comes to Instagram marketing and content. You start thinking like the expert you are. And I know that a lot of people are like even cringe at the word of, you know, calling themselves an expert. They're like, I'm not an expert, but you really are, right? Like you are ahead.

08:57

of your ideal client or customer in some way. And that's why you have an innovative product or service solution to support them. And what often happens when you're an expert in your industry is that you use industry language without realizing it. And you skip steps because they feel obvious. So in your content, you might explain the solution or you might describe the problem in your

09:26

expert speak. And here's the tricky part. That doesn't mean that you're a bad teacher or you're bad at what you do or anything like that. It means you are incredibly knowledgeable. But the problem is, is that your dream client or customer isn't standing where you are. They're standing 10 miles behind you and they're just trying to figure out why their back hurts or why no one's buying their coaching offer.

09:56

or why they're so burned out and they hate their job, or why they are struggling to not pick up a drink after being sober for three months. They don't know the terminology that you know. They don't yet know the expert speak terminology or necessarily the framework or the process or the anatomical terms that you would describe in helping them fix their back pain, right?

10:26

They just know something isn't working in their life. They know that they struggle to go hiking with their grandkids because they're out of breath and they're really worried about that. And that's why one of the biggest messaging shifts I coach inside of Hot Reels has almost nothing to do with Instagram, but it has everything to do with communication because people don't hire the person who sounds the smartest.

10:55

They hire the person who makes them feel seen, heard, and understood. And that's an important distinction because marketing isn't about proving how much you know or sounding smart, right? Marketing is about helping someone, your ideal follower, to think, oh my gosh, that's exactly me.

11:22

And once they feel understood, then they're ready to hear your solution. That's exactly what happened with my Hot Reels client, Krista. Krista is a chronic pain specialist, and she helps athletes and people to move better and feel better in their bodies and really reclaim their lives after decades of chronic pain. And when she joined Hot Reels, she already had

11:52

so much experience. had helped hundreds of clients. She wasn't missing expertise. She was missing a way to communicate that expertise in a language her dream clients immediately recognized. So I interviewed Krista a few months ago on the podcast. So I'm going to share some clips because it's one thing for me to tell you her story. It's another thing for you to hear it from her.

12:16

But I want you to listen carefully to what she says here because I think so many of you are going to hear yourselves in her story. Let's talk about your messaging transformation. So when you first came in, you started creating your reels. I remember that one of the biggest things that I was supporting you with is you were positioning all of your content as an expert because you know so much about the body and you would use these really big words. And I was like.

12:45

We need to write like a fifth grader, okay? Like people are scrolling so quickly, you two seconds to capture attention. Like you cannot use this big word. So let's talk through that. What has shifted for you in terms of your messaging? What's changed is I now think, now how would the person in pain say this? Not how would I say it, but how would someone struggling with pain say this?

13:12

How would someone struggling with low back or pelvic floor pain say this instead of how I might say it? When Krista shared that with me, I remember smiling because I thought, yes, that is exactly it. And honestly, this is one of the biggest messaging mistakes I see entrepreneurs making every single day. Experts naturally think in solutions like the end of the line, right? You've spent years, sometimes decades, studying your craft. You've learned the terminology. You've developed your frameworks. You've forgotten.

13:42

how much you know. And I often struggle with this, like full transparency as an Instagram marketing coach, because sometimes in my brain, I'm making a lot of assumptions about the things that everyone already knows. When in fact, a lot of people don't. And a lot of my people need me to go back to square one or square two or square three before I jump to square 10.

14:11

but it's just so easy to forget how much you know. And it's almost like the curse of knowledge, right? When it comes to marketing, it can really make your messaging kind of fly above the head of your ideal client or customer. And obviously you don't want that. And what I have found is like, once you know something really deeply, it can feel incredibly difficult to remember what it felt like before you understood it.

14:42

And so your marketing starts sounding like, here's my process, here's my methodology, here's my framework, here's my five-step system. You're selling the solution, right, whatever it is to your products or service. Meanwhile, your dream client is over there thinking, well, why am I so overwhelmed? Or why isn't this working? Or why does this pattern keep coming up in my life? And obviously with these examples, everything would be customized to you and your business, but I'm just kind of giving high level.

15:11

examples of this. So they're not searching for your framework or your proven process. They're searching for relief. They're searching for hope. They're searching for someone who understands the problem they're living every single day in a really specific way. And that's why I always tell my Hot Wheels clients, people don't buy solutions. They buy the feeling of being understood.

15:39

I'm so excited. Just this week, I am welcoming a new 12-month private client into my private coaching program. In my onboarding form, I say, why did you choose me as your mentor? And she said, you really understand my pain points. And I do, right? Like, I know exactly where she's at. And that's a feeling, right? That's a feeling of being seen and understood. And it builds that trust.

16:08

It builds that bridge. And of course, that builds that confidence that I am the right mentor or coach that can help her to get from where she's at now, which is feeling a total lack of confidence with her social media marketing strategy to knowing with certainty how this game of Instagram marketing works, how this game of social media marketing works, and not only to drive visibility, but leads and sales for her business.

16:36

And that's why she said yes, because she knows I'm the person to help her do that. So kind of giving you some other niche examples to really hit this home. So let's say you're a financial advisor thinking like you need a retirement strategy. Maybe your potential client is thinking, I am terrified I'm going to run out of money and have to sell my house and live on the streets or like get into that pain point of like.

17:04

What are they thinking before you tell them you need a retirement strategy? Right? If you're a wedding photographer, maybe you're thinking as the expert, I create timeless, iconic, documentary style imagery that you're going to love and cherish forever. Right? Whatever your brand positioning is. I just made that up, by the way. But maybe your couple, the engaged couple that is considering hiring you is thinking,

17:34

I'm terrified that we're gonna look awkward in front of the camera. Do you see the difference? So experts describe the solution and your clients or customers describe the symptom of what they are feeling and what it looks like on a Tuesday at 9 a.m. Really specific messaging. That is what's working well on Instagram right now and.

18:00

all across social platforms. And that's what's gonna help you and your small business really stand out. So this is a moment to kind of check in. If your marketing starts with your solution all the time, before you've really acknowledged their symptom or real problem or pain point, they're not gonna feel seen and they're gonna keep scrolling no matter how brilliant or smart you are.

18:23

So this is exactly what Krista realized when she first joined HotRail. She was creating content that was technically accurate. It was educational, it was helpful, thoughtful, but something was missing. And just listen to what she says happened. I felt like I had got stuck in a posting trap in that I was posting solutions in like bite-sized solutions, which wasn't really speaking to my ideal clients. People who go, have a problem. Could she help me?

18:52

that didn't happen with me posting little solutions. So I found the courage to go back to speaking more to the problems. Yes. And, you know, pointing at the solutions. And that was another shift. I love how she described that. She said she got stuck posting little solutions, know, tiny educational tips and bite-sized pieces of information. And please hear me, I'm not saying educational content is dead or bad.

19:20

Education is totally one of the pillars of my content, but information by itself doesn't create connection. And I want you to think about your own life. Okay, when was the last time you hired someone? Simply because they knew a lot. Probably never, right? You hired them because at some point you thought, oh my gosh, they get me. They get exactly where I'm at and they can help me to...

19:48

across this bridge to the other side. And that's really what creates trust, not information, but recognition. And that's why one of my favorite questions to ask inside of HotRails isn't, should we post this week? It's what conversation is already happening inside of your ideal client or customer's head? Because if you can enter that conversation and not be afraid of leaning into that

20:18

struggle and pain of what does keep your ideal client or customer up at night, or where are they feeling stuck or overwhelmed. Your content will become so much more magnetic. And it's not because you're manipulating anyone, it's because people finally feel seen and understood. So I have a little homework challenge for you this week. Before you create your next real or Instagram carousel, or even send your next email to your list,

20:47

I want you to open up your notes app on your phone or you could even do a chat inside of chatgbt or Claude and you can hit that little microphone button, which is by the way, my hack to how I can raise my best emails when I'm out on my nature walks is I use that microphone button on chatgbt or Claude. But I want you to either speak or write down five exact

21:14

sentences that your ideal client or customer has actually said to you. Not what you think they're feeling or not your polished marketing buttoned up version of what they're saying. They're actual words, they're literal words. So maybe if you do sales calls, you have transcripts. Maybe you are in conversations in your Instagram DMs and you can see the questions that people are dropping in or maybe.

21:40

On Instagram, there's someone else in your niche who's doing it really well, and you go check their comments on their post to see what questions they're getting asked. Maybe you received emails or you have onboarding forms of Dreamboat clients that you can go look at, or maybe you have five-star reviews and testimonials that you can go see how people describe what they were feeling before they hired you and then the transformation that your product or service delivered for them.

22:08

Maybe it's a conversation that you had at a networking event. I can't tell you how many times people, when they find out I'm an Instagram marketing strategist, I'm really paying attention to their reaction, right? So for example, sometimes people will say like, oh, I'm so bad at Instagram, right? Which by the way, you're not bad at Instagram. It's a skill just like everything else. It would be like me saying,

22:33

I'm bad at swimming and yet I've never stepped foot in a pool or taken a swim lesson, right? You're not born good or bad at Instagram. It's a decision that you make that it's the skill that you're going to learn. But that's another conversation. So the point of this exercise is I want you to write down the exact words of your target audience, your ideal clients or customers as they said it. Because if you can find those five sentences, and this is obviously just to get you started with.

23:02

some target market research is really what this is. Those are your five next hooks for your videos or your carousels or your yapping videos. So when you stop trying to sound impressive and start sounding familiar, you're speaking as if you are your ideal client. Everything changes. And that's exactly what happened to Krista. She stopped asking herself, how would I explain this in like a private session with a client?

23:32

And rather, how would someone living with chronic pain actually describe their low back pain? Not the way that she would describe it in her expert speak, but how would they describe it? And that one shift really changed the way she approached every piece of content she created. Now listen in to how I was kind of describing that and reflecting that back to her in the interview.

23:57

I know one of the things that you shared with me is that it used to feel really overwhelming for you to put like, how do I put this information about back pain into a seven second video, right? That's actually effective that people are going to want to watch. And that is the art form of short form video marketing. How do you capture attention? How do you call out your very specific ideal client or customer? One of the things I teach is

24:27

using the words of your ideal client or customer, which is exactly what you just described. And I remember so many moments like that, Krista, and working with you where I was like, well, you describe it like this, like you would use the word embodiment, for example. And I was like, I don't know if your professional athlete ideal client is using that word embodiment. And you're like, oh, no, they're not. They don't even know about that yet. So then I was like, OK, we need to write your hooks and everything in their voice.

24:54

If you're listening to this, that is a great reminder for you that we tend to forget the expertise that we hold. And that's why target market research is so important is really paying attention to how people are describing their problems to you and using their exact words in your marketing.

25:19

I want to leave you with one more story from Krista because I think it perfectly illustrates everything we've been talking about. Someone had been quietly watching Krista's content for months and she wasn't commenting on her content. She wasn't constantly DMing her, but she was watching. And that's one thing that I want you to take away from this episode is that don't get discouraged if there's a lack of engagement. I promise you someone is always watching you.

25:45

Okay, and that always kind of keeps me going when I'm feeling like, oh, nothing's working. So take that and run with that. But this person was watching Krista and when life reached a breaking point for her, she knew exactly who to hire. And that was Krista. And it wasn't because she had this viral reel that magically drew clients to her. It was because her messaging had made one thing crystal clear. She understands exactly what I'm going through.

26:12

this person who had been watching her content for months, but she really wasn't in a place to hire her yet. And that's an important reminder because sometimes we assume that if someone doesn't buy after one reel or one month of reels or one podcast episode or multiple emails, our content isn't working. But that's not how most buying decisions actually happen, right? People don't discover you today and hire you tomorrow.

26:39

They discover you, they follow you, they watch you, they lurk on your feed. And over time, it builds trust with you and your company. And then one day something shifts, right? Life happens and they need the thing that you sell or the pain that they're in becomes too great or the timing becomes right for them. And when that moment comes, they already know exactly who they want to work with and it's you. And that's part of why Instagram is so incredible is it keeps your business top of mind.

27:08

And that's exactly what happened for Krista. Let's listen. She's been watching me probably since I started doing the social media market. She's also a figure skater. Figure skaters can have a lot of pain. Yes. And so I knew her from when we were young and training. So she has been watching my posts all along, but I didn't know she had so much pain. She would comment here and there.

27:33

You know, she was like around the fringes. She would come in, she would stay connected. She was like, oh, maybe this could help me. And then she had a crisis. She had a crisis where she's like, oh, it's either I'm going to have surgery or I'm going to do something different. And then I had just done a series around how tightness in your whole body can come just from tightening your jaw. And if you could let go of the jaw, then I give some tips. But I'm really just talking about the jaw. And really, that came from another...

28:00

client who also found me because of Instagram, who's left a message with me and said, I think I might know the answer you're going to tell me. But when I do pull ups, I tighten my jaw to help me. Is that helpful? So I did a post. I was like, I got to do all series around this. So good. The person who had tightness everywhere did the mini chat automation to get the jaw tension release video. And it gave her some relief. And she was like, okay.

28:30

Now is the time for me to help my body heal. And it's so right for her. I mean, she's going to be able to have the active life that she wants. I love that story because there's a lot of gold in there. But what I want to highlight for you is that this person ended up investing in a high ticket program with Krista, and she didn't become a client because, you know, one reel magically convinced her, you know.

28:56

She became a client because Krista had been consistently showing up with messaging that made her feel understood. And she provided a small solution where this client got some relief and was like, okay, wow, all right, I want to hire Krista. The funnel was this person was watching Krista's content. They opted into a freebie, a lead magnet.

29:20

they got success from the lead magnet, they went into Krista's sales funnel. And so this is kind of the backend work of Instagram marketing that I do with my private clients. If that's something that you want to explore, your next step is to apply for a complimentary Instagram breakthrough session with me. If you want to grab a free call with me, you just need to go to elizabethmarbury.com slash application, and you can take some time to fill that out. And then if I think

29:47

I'm a good fit for you. I will invite you into a complimentary 30 minute call with me. But the real lesson from Krista's story is that Krista had refined her messaging to help her ideal client feel understood. And so when the timing was right, there wasn't another person she was considering. There wasn't comparison shopping. There wasn't, me go research five other chronic pain relief coaches. She already knew because the trust had been built through the content.

30:15

And that's exactly what your content is doing every single day, whether you can see it or not, is someone is quietly watching your posts and saving them and sending your content to a friend, right? If you're doing it right. And someone is thinking like, this person gets it. You don't always get to see that happening, which is why this series started with that consistency and the mindset of playing the long game and why that matters.

30:40

and also why you have to have a strategy, right, to connect all these dots. And then today's episode is all about the messaging, know, how the messaging, the words that you're choosing on the screen, the hooks, the captions, your yapping direct-to-camera videos, it all works together. And so one of my favorite moments from this entire interview with Krista actually

31:05

had nothing to do with Instagram metrics, but it had everything to do with confidence. And I find that a lot of people come to me when they're feeling that lack of confidence or confusion when it comes to Instagram marketing or social media marketing in general. So listen to what Krista says now about creating content compared to when she first joined Hot Reels and felt totally paralyzed. How does creating content feel for you now compared to before?

31:35

I actually enjoy it. I don't panic now. If I don't have an idea, it's okay. It doesn't matter. Another one will come. When I feel a little stuck, if I think I really need to do some, some content, I'll go look at your feed and get some ideas. I'll go look at people's feeds that I like and see if anything sparks me. So part of why I have that attitude about creating content, partly because now I've been doing it with you for a year and a half and

32:04

I'm surrounded by people creating content. So, I mean, not in my life, in my personal life, no, but in my, in our group and people in that was we've been seeing what people create because of my confidence that I have built with social media. At the end of last year, I decided to become a speaker. And I know that the only way you can become a speaker into today's world is if you're skillful with social media. And I'm like, Oh,

32:33

I'm still able with social media, can do this. Can we just pause for a second? That right there is why I do this work. Because yes, Instagram can help you grow your audience, it can generate leads, it can increase your revenue. I want all of that for you and more. But what excites me is watching someone start believing that they're capable of something even bigger in their life. Whatever their big bold vision is for their life, that just lights.

33:02

me up, always say, you know, Instagram is my vehicle to help you live into your most authentic expression of who you are. And Krista didn't just learn how to make better reels inside of hot reels. She learned how to communicate her expertise with confidence. And because of that, she started saying yes to opportunities she would have never have considered before. Speaking.

33:27

Right, growing her business in an entirely new way. And that is the ripple effect of learning how to communicate and activate your ideal client or customer. So if you remember nothing else from today's episode, remember these three things. Number one, experts think in solutions, clients think in symptoms and problems. So start where your client is, not where you are. Number two,
