S3 Ep61 Transcript: How She Grew from 2,500 to 40K Followers in 7 Months: An Etsy Biz Owner Success Story

00:00

Welcome back to the show. Thank you so much for joining me today. I have a  super special guest. name is Asla Wade. She is a creative, she is an Etsy shop owner. In fact, she grew her Etsy shop to over seven figures in sales, which is  bananas. It's incredible. She is a total creative genius and she's also one of my Hot Reels clients.

00:27

So I wanted to bring her on the show so she can  give you a little behind the scenes of what Hot Reels is really like.  And Asla has made her own realizations within Instagram of what really works and what resonates for her audience. And you need to take notes because her strategy is working so well for her. You're gonna hear soon how she grew her following when she first came into Hot Reels. She was at 2,500 followers.

00:55

She's at over  35,000 followers now,  and we're gonna pull back the curtain on her journey, how she did it, what's working for her right now. So get ready, I'm super excited to dive in.  Welcome to Strut It, a podcast about creating bold visibility on social media with zero apologies.

01:19

I'm Elizabeth Marberry, your host and Instagram marketing coach. I help small business owners get seen on Instagram and monetize their offers so they can make more money doing their sole lead work. If you're tired of spinning your wheels on Instagram and you're seeking simple, proven Instagram marketing strategies that actually work, you're in the right place.  Let's dive in.

01:50

Welcome to the show. Elizabeth, thank you so much for having me.  Yeah, you are so welcome. So I gave you a little bit of an intro, but tell everybody quickly about  what do you create? Because I know you love to create things. So tell us about what you create. Who's it for? Tell us about your business, any background so they can really get to know who you are. OK, I love this.  I hand make custom gifts, custom picture frames.

02:20

and ornaments and personalized gifts for all of your loved ones, including your pets. I've been on Etsy for about 10 years now.  And  since Hot Reels, I'm also on Instagram now selling on there as well.  Woohoo! I love it. I love it. She has lots of different custom gifts in her shop. I know that we've talked about like some of your best sellers are your pet loss frames. So if you are listening and you've ever lost an animal and I know when my husband and I lost, we had a

02:50

sweet little poodle-y guy, his name was Albert, and he was a poodle mix,  and he passed away a couple years ago. And I remember feeling like, okay, I want to do something to memorialize him, but I didn't know what to do.  I wish I had known about you, Asla, at that time, because we ended up going to Hobby Lobby and had them do something for us, but honestly, it kind of turned out little janky. So your pet last frames are so incredible because it's like a way to...

03:20

Just  remember your pet in such a special way and you customize those, right? So it has the dog's name or the pet's name or how are they customized? Yeah, they have the names, the birthdays, the day that they pass away. Some people get really detailed on them. It's such an honor to actually make those and to know I get reviews all day long on them of people saying like, oh my gosh, my friend cried when he opened this up or I love seeing a picture of Buddy on my desk every day. And it's

03:49

Honestly, just such a sweet honor to be able to create those items. Gift-giving is my love language. So I know that when I make something and I create it and someone gifts something they purchased from me, it's actually going to be meaningful instead of just a generic gift from Hobby Lobby. Oh my gosh,  absolutely. That is so important and special.

04:10

Before you came into Hot Reels,  what were you struggling with and really why did you decide to join Hot Reels? Which is, by the way, if you're listening, you're like, what the heck is Hot Reels? Hot Reels is my 12 month Instagram content lab. If you've been listening to the podcast at all, I'm sure you've heard  me talk about it, but it's my high touch group mentorship container where you get to come in and work with a community of other business owners on growing your business on Instagram.

04:40

the focus of that container is really on content. So how do you create the most scroll stopping content so you can grow your following and boost your brand visibility? Cause that's really the first step of marketing, right? Is building that audience of aligned people. So Aza, why did you  decide to join Hot Reels and what were you kind of struggling with at that time? I decided to honestly join Hot Reels because of your energy.

05:08

Literally, I saw you  speak at a summit last summer and then joined your email list and we emailed a little back and forth. And when you launched Hot Reels,  I was like, I have to invest and go all in on this because I believe she can help me. And it has been literally the best investment ever. Like it has  so paid for itself over and over again, just in the confidence that I gained. And like, honestly, being able to show up.

05:34

I had a couple of other friends and coworkers that ran my social media for a few years. So I've been on Instagram and TikTok for a few years now, and they did a great job, but it was just very like cookie cutter without me being involved in it at all. I wasn't viewed as a brand. So being in Hot Reels, it helped me view myself as more of a brand and position myself out there and get my messaging down pat. Like that's been  huge for me because that helps me to show up.

06:03

in all these other ways  of my business and even my life. So it's been great. Well, thanks for the feedback. I so appreciate your endorsement and, you know, reflection on my energy. That's I get that a lot where people are like, I just love your energy. And I appreciate that. And it's also funny. And I don't know if  anyone's listening if when you get positive feedback or compliments,  I definitely have these moments of like

06:29

wait, what am I doing? know, because I'm just being myself.  So I'm like, wait, what is it about me that people are gravitating towards? So I appreciate that feedback so much.  And yes, I remember when you were considering joining exactly what you said, like you had always kind of delegated your socials to someone else. You were totally hands off it.  And I remember  you expressed a lot of kind of fear around it of

06:57

Elizabeth, don't want to get on camera. I don't know what I'm doing. don't like there was just a lot like you were saying kind of lack of confidence and even just how to do it or what do you write in the hook? What do you write in the caption? What are the formulas like all of that? And one of the reasons why you've been so successful in the program is you are a queen implementer. Okay, so we have this thing inside of hot reels. I don't talk about it that often.

07:26

but now my beloved listener, you're gonna be in on it,  is when you first join Hot Reels, I have a little challenge where within the first 90 days, if you post three reels each week, so three reels is kind of the minimum expectation, for the first 90 days, you win a complimentary call with me, like coaching call with me, a private call.  And Asla totally rocked it. She's like, I'm up for the challenge and you just went to work and you were implementing and,

07:55

You are posting imperfectly and you are showing up. And so that's part of why you've had such great results. So I just want to highlight that, that you are such a great implementer and you also are not afraid to ask questions. So this is a pro tip for anyone, whether you work with me in a coaching container or you go hire a different mentor, it doesn't matter. But it's really important that when you are working with a mentor or a coach that you  ask really good questions.

08:25

I can tell you that because I've invested in a lot of mentors and coaches in the last six years. I've invested thousands of dollars and I always get a return on investment. How do I do that? It's the questions I ask. I am not afraid to ask questions. I'm constantly asking questions and Asa, you're really good about that. You're really good about  asking  for clarifying questions, asking for feedback, asking for what you need. So I just want to say like Queen Implementer,

08:54

great job asking me lots of really insightful questions. Thank you. I love being able to get feedback in the group because it's almost instantaneous. You post something on there and then I ask the questions, I wait for your feedback and sometimes I'll even come back with more questions and I love the instant coaching through that. And it's like a safe zone to  be able to ask those questions. I'm comfortable, I love our group.

09:20

And I honestly feel that there is no dumb questions in our group because there have been some things that I've asked where I'm like embarrassed to write it out. But it's great because it's such a comfortable  safe zone where sometimes I'll get feedback that where I'm like, oh, okay, I can totally see where I needed to do that. Or other times I'm like, wow, I would have never even seen that. So it's great.

09:42

Yeah, so what Oslo is referring to is we have a private community when you join Hot Reels where you can share your content in there and get feedback from me or you can ask questions.  And it is so powerful to be in our group because it's a small group.  It's an intimate group of business owners who are all working toward the same mission. A lot of us struggle with the same things. And so it is  an incredible  space of accountability, support.

10:12

And just I see you guys cheering each other on too, you know?  And I know in the group,  forging  relationships outside of our group, that is a huge part of investing in a group program is sometimes you'll make business besties that you'll have for life.  But I'm really happy that you highlighted the safe container because  my goal with all of my coaching programs is I want you to feel totally safe, that you can ask me.

10:40

anything that there's no dumb questions  and that I just want to encourage you to just  be you and a huge part of learning how to market your business on social media is embracing vulnerability, right? Because  it's really vulnerable to post content and then be able to literally measure the number of likes.  Like you could say, Elizabeth, nobody liked it. Look, literally no one liked it.

11:07

So what other parts of our lives do we get that like instant feedback, right?  And so it is so vulnerable and it's gonna bring up all your shadows and your muck. And that's,  think one of my superpowers as a mentor and coach is I understand that. And I know that anyone who joins Hot Reels is brave. You're already brave, cause you're willing to go and try. So many people are not even willing to do the work. They want it, but they're not willing to work for it.

11:34

So I'm really happy to hear that you felt like it and you continue to feel like it's just a really great community and like safe space because that's so important. 100%. And like you said, I've even made friends out of the group too. And now we chat on the weekends and whatnot and just help and support each other. It's definitely a great community. I love it. love that. So let's get into some of your biggest wins in

12:00

hot reels  and this is where I'm going to say,  I know Asla sometimes gets a little shy about like, this is my wins. It's a little spooky, right? It puts you out of your comfort zone. But I always tell my people and I'm going to tell you this, my beloved listener, it is so important to celebrate your wins. When you celebrate your wins, it honestly raises the vibe of everyone around you  and it shows other people what's possible,  right?

12:28

which is so important, what's possible. So Aza, can you share with us like some of your biggest wins that you've had in the group so far? Yes, and I actually just did the math last night because my husband asked me, so we GPT the math. I have had 1500 % growth in my followers. Okay, so I joined Hot Reels in July or August of last year, and I started implementing everything that you told me, but my follower count stayed.

12:56

pretty stagnant. think I was within like 10 or 20 followers that entire time until December one morning at the gym. I'm just like, you know what?  F this. I'm just going to start posting content, but I'll put it on there as a trial reel because that felt like another safety net for me. And I started just posting, posting consistently with your help. I found my voice, which, you know, changed a few times too. But once I found my voice, I was like, okay, we're just rolling with this and we're going to keep posting.

13:24

And so December 6th, I was at 2,522 followers and this morning I met over 40,000 followers. Woohoo! Yes! Yes, yes, yes! I am celebrating! Oh my gosh, did you say a 1,500 % increase in followers? Yes, that's amazing! That so amazing, that is so amazing.

13:46

And  I'm so glad that you mentioned the whole like, yeah, you started in August, you had August, September, October, November. Okay, I can do math quickly.  Five months of feeling like, oh my gosh, my follower count isn't moving. And I tell you guys this  all the time, you have to have that long game mentality, right? You have to be playing the long game and not just playing the long game, but you have to be consistent for a long period of time. That is...

14:14

honestly, part of why I structured Hot Reels to be a year long program is in working with different business owners and doing kind of shorter term programs. I was realizing for them to really see the results, they're going to need to be in this longer. And every phase of growth has different challenges, right? And so the fact that you didn't grow for five months ish and then all of a sudden like

14:42

boom, explosive growth. And that is exactly what happened to me. That's my story with both my brands. And truly, you guys, this is how Instagram works,  is you're posting consistently over time.  And with my personal brand, I remember I posted for a year,  and I think I was around 1,000 followers at that time. I remember every follower that I got was hard won. Like literally every single one. I was like, oh my God, this is a miracle. This one person followed me.

15:12

And  for a year, I pretty much didn't grow. You know, I would  gain a few, lose a few, which is also, by the way, totally a normal part of Instagram. If you're losing people, it's really not a problem. It's just part of being on Instagram. That's a whole nother episode. But I didn't grow for a year until I had some videos start to pop off and explode. And that's totally what happened to you too. think about it, know, Asla had done...

15:40

at least minimum 100 reels before her video started popping off, probably more like 150 or something, because you were posting a lot. And think about it, if she just like threw in the towel and was like, this isn't even worth it, she wouldn't have gotten to 40,000 followers. So you have to really have that long-term mindset. And I love, Aza, what you highlighted, and I want to highlight this for everybody. When you are creating content consistently, even if it's not moving the needle with your followership,

16:11

you're still learning so much.  Asla has already said multiple times, I'm learning to find my voice. I'm learning to find my message. That doesn't happen by like sitting down and staring at a Google Doc for an hour, okay? It happens by posting imperfect content  over and over and writing things over and over and over again until you start to understand like,  this is my voice. This is my brand. This is my message, right?

16:38

and you learn by doing and Asla, you're such a good example of that,  of really like learning by doing.  And I'm so happy that you've had such success in your follower growth. And  that also has led to some other opportunities, right? Like collaborations or like PR. What other things has that led to for you?

17:00

Yes, so now I have a couple of collaborations I'm working on  and yes, definitely an interview with a local magazine, which has been so cool. Just way more exposure and also just a little bit of maybe street cred. Like when I approach people now, it's just a bit of social proof that you have behind your brand. I love that you said street cred because you know, we're always saying like, vanity metrics don't matter, but they do in the sense that it's true when you have grown.

17:29

a following organically, meaning like you didn't pay for followers. Like these are actual people who have followed you. It does give you some street cred. And the truth is, that consumers today are very savvy. And when they're searching for a product or service, they're going to Google, they're going to Instagram, they're going to TikTok, they're going to YouTube. People are looking  everywhere. So if people are, you know, searching for custom frames,

17:56

and they find hundreds of Etsy shops, but they go onto Instagram and then they see Oslo's account, they're gonna be like, oh my gosh, this is incredible, right? Like it's a psychology thing. So it does make a difference. If you're listening to this and you don't have a big following, don't stress, you can go back  and listen to, I did an interview with Paula Newlands, who was one of my private clients, who has only a hundred followers and she closed a high ticket client from Instagram. So don't make it an excuse.

18:26

If you have a low following, why things aren't working out for you. But I also think we can be honest and say it's really fun to grow a following. It's really fun when you have those metrics and you have that street cred.  And I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that.  I totally agree with you. It is fun. And you just get to interact with more people, which is what it's really all about, that connection and building the community. Yeah, absolutely. Totally. OK, so I want to get into the nitty gritty of how do you

18:56

grow a big following like this?  you have videos that quote unquote pop off or go viral and Asla had a video that went  massively viral. Asla, can you tell us about it? Yes, and it's actually a remix that I did  of  a doctor talking about some parenting advice. It went viral as of this morning as 19 million views  and it got my page 19,000 followers. It's a remix. So it's not even my video, but

19:25

Why I gained the followers is because you helped me optimize my bio.  So that's amazing. And my messaging, the caption there related to  what I do. So  it was a great way, because if I didn't have the messaging nailed or my bio, then people would have just scrolled past. It's a great video still and would have gotten a like, but probably not the followers.

19:46

I love that you mentioned that because in a past episode, recent episode, I did a whole breakdown on a reel that I did recently for my business that got over 8 million views, over 8,000 followers, and it was a remix. And I broke down really the strategy  of behind it that you can totally remix reels. It doesn't mean it's going to bring in followers for your account unless your account is really optimized and there's strategy behind it. And so you've been...

20:14

really doing a phenomenal job at implementing that. If you're curious about Reels remixes, you can go back and listen to that previous episode, because I really go into depth as to how you can do that. Now, another thing, Asla, I want to ask you about is trial Reels. Instagram recently released a new feature called trial Reels. Basically, what that means is you can post a Reel to people who don't already follow you first and get those stats.

20:43

And then you can decide, do I want to share this to my followers and have it show up on my page, on my main feed or not? And Asa, when trial reels came out, I remember you were really excited about it and you started using it. And  I want to tell everyone Asa has used trial reels more than I have. So I feel like she's more of an expert on how to use it. So I'm going to hand the mic over to Asa now. Tell me like why you love trial reels and why someone listening might...

21:11

want to use those  or test those out.  So for me, trial reels is almost another layer of safety.  Can you sense this here? I'm having a tough time with safety. It's a way to put content out there and have it just get tested to all non-followers. And then you can check the metrics and see if you want to share it to everyone or not. But I post almost  every reel I make as a trial reel first. And then if it's something I really want everyone to see,

21:41

or just to make sure that it's on my feed forever, then I will switch it and share it to everyone regardless of what the stats show. But one of the ways that I did private membership with you or mentorship with you recently too, and one of the fun things that we did was test out trial reels with the same exact reel multiple times with just like a different hook. You we worded something slightly differently on the screen.

22:05

And then I was able to post all of those as trial reels and just check the numbers and they were drastically different. Like some would only have a couple of hundred views and some were at seven or 8,000. So it's great to be able to just test stuff and put it out there as a wide net and then narrow in what's actually working. Yes. So I'm so glad you brought this up because I wanted to make sure that this is a pro tip for our listeners in terms of how to use trial reels. So Asla.

22:34

recently did a private mentorship with me.  It was really cool. She had this video  of it was just a beautiful nature scene  of a tree with like sunlight shining through. And then she had a really inspiring message to  specifically women  about being seen and allowing yourself to be seen and all these things. So it was the exact same video, the exact same message, but we played with the hook in terms of

23:04

who we're speaking to. We tested out just the video with that message. We tested out, sis, dot, dot, dot, and then the message. And then we tested to women everywhere, dot, dot, dot, and then the message. And she posted all three of those. So one thing I want you to notice about using trial reels is that it's a great way to test hooks, but you only want to change one thing. So it's not like she picked a different video or a different.

23:33

audio or a different caption for every single one. We just tweaked  one thing. So that way you can actually measure what's making a difference, right? You have to have data that's measurable. And if you're changing too many data points at once, you can't analyze it. You can't make an educated decision because you don't know what's working, what's not. But when you just change one data point, like we did, with HASIS or to Women Everywhere or  not calling out our audience at all, and I believe

24:00

What you're saying is the HASIS one got like 100 views or it was like low. And then the two women everywhere got like 8,000 or something, right? Exactly. And so that is a great example of how you could use a trial reel to  test and see what content is gonna resonate with your audience. So I love that you do that. And it's so funny because I use trial reels sometimes more when I'm like testing out a totally new concept.

24:29

type or like content type that feels a little bit like out of my niche or what I would normally post. But because I kind of have this mindset of like, even if it gets not a lot of views, I know the right people are going to see it and you know, watch my talking head video and, and learn from me. And I'm kind of unhooking from some of those views. But I think for  people who struggle with the visibility piece and the confidence piece,

24:57

I think trial wheels are so smart because it's like a mental game of feeling less pressure in a way  where you're just like, whatever,  which I kind of feel that less pressure vibe all the time.  But if you don't, that can be a really great way for you to kind of boost your confidence.  And of course you can use it very strategically and like that is really smart what we did with the hooks, right? So it can be used in a super, super smart way. But I also just want to highlight there's that like energetic component too. Definitely.

25:27

100%. And you know, you're right, it's worse for me to fail in front of people that I know. So for me, the trial reels is like, I'll just put it out there. I don't even know those people and they don't know me. So they can just keep scrolling past and no hard feelings. Yeah, I love that. I love that. Take that tip, you guys. Like if you're that person who's second guessing yourself, or you're like, oh my God, I don't want anyone who already follows me to see this. Definitely leverage trial reels and you should have access to that.

25:56

If you don't, I know that they're still rolling it out to people, so stay tuned. If you don't see it though, I do recommend that you update your app because sometimes if your app is not updated, if your Instagram app is not updated, you won't get those new features. So little pro tip there. Okay, Asli, to close out,  I would love to hear, and I know I'm sitting right here, so pretend like I'm not right here.

26:21

But for our audience who is listening in and maybe they're considering joining Hot Reels, on a scale of one to 10, how would you rate your Hot Reels experience and do you recommend Hot Reels to  other business owners wanting to grow on Instagram?  I 100 % would recommend Hot Reels. Honestly, totally for me, a 10 out of 10, it's a no brainer. It's the first group container for something like this that I've done.

26:50

I've purchased a lot of courses, like online courses, where you'll join a Zoom meeting every now and again. But this has been such a small container that I almost feel like it's one-on-one coaching. And I definitely feel like it's one-on-one coaching, especially when we're in the Facebook group and we're going back and forth. And you've helped me  so much with just learning even how to frame my questions and my thoughts around what I'm posting and who I'm trying to speak to.

27:20

For me, it's hands down been  worth every penny. The confidence that I've gained, even being able to have Zoom calls now and things where like I can listen to replays and not want to puke  from hearing my own voice. Just so much confidence and energetic work has gone into it too that you don't even think about. I feel like, you know, you can watch a YouTube video, you can Google how to...

27:44

change positioning of text or whatever, but there is just so much mentally and emotionally that's gone in for me in Hot Reels that I wouldn't have been able to replicate anywhere else. So for sure, definitely recommend. Thank you. Wow. It is so cool for me to be in this seat right now and receive that because when I  birthed this program, that was really my intention, everything you just said. So I'm so happy that

28:14

You've trusted me that you are a part of our group. I adore you and I'm so happy you've been so successful.  And  I know that people are listening and they're like, I love Asla. I definitely want to check out her custom gifts, her frames. Where can they shop and  get your goods? Because they're sick of ordering their...

28:35

generic stuff off Amazon, they want something actually custom and they want it to be handcrafted by you with all the love you put into what you create. So where can they purchase your gifts?  Oh, thank you. I would love to make those gifts. I am on Instagram at Boutique Butterlu, B-U-T-T-E-R-L-U. And then for now, I'm just on Etsy. So it's butterloo.etsy.com is where they can find all my stuff.
