If you posted content consistently for five straight months and your follower count barely moved, would you keep going? Would you keep showing up every week if it felt like nobody was watching? Today I'm sharing the story of one of my Hot Reels clients who did exactly that. She joined my program with about 2,500 followers and a totally dormant account she hadn't posted on for years. She spent the first few months of Hot Reels wondering if any of it was working. By the end of our year together, she grew to more than 70,000 followers. If you've ever felt like you're posting, trying, learning, showing up, and still wondering if Instagram is even worth it anymore for your business, this episode is for you.

S3 Ep126 Transcript - The Truth About Instagram Growth in 2026 (Part 1)

00:00

Let me ask you a question. If you posted content consistently for five straight months and your follower count barely moved, would you keep going? Seriously, would you keep showing up every week if it felt like nobody was watching? Because today I'm sharing the story of one of my Hot Reels clients who did exactly that.

00:21

She joined my program with about 2,500 followers and a totally dead account that she hadn't posted on for years. She spent the first few months of Hot Reels wondering if any of it was working, but by the end of our year together, she grew her followers to more than 70,000. So if you've ever felt like you're posting, trying, learning, showing up and still wondering if Instagram is even worth it anymore for your business,

00:50

This episode is for you. I hope you're pumped. Let's go.

00:57

01:36

Welcome back to the show. I'm so happy you are here because today kicks off something I've been so excited to build and create for you. And that is over the next five weeks, I'm gonna be pulling back the curtain on what it actually takes to grow a small business on Instagram in 2026, not influencer fluff.

02:01

not here's the trend you need to try today and constantly be reinventing the wheel every week. I'm talking real strategies, client stories, and data to back it all up with the intention that what I'm gonna share with you will change the way you think about Instagram marketing and approach your content creation for your business. And what we're gonna do is every week I'm gonna share one of my client success stories.

02:30

the biggest lesson that came from their journey and the strategy that we developed that really created the breakthrough. My hope is that whether you ever become a client of mine or not, you're going to walk away from each episode with something you can immediately implement and apply to your own business. And I am so excited to share with you that on Monday, August 17th,

02:59

I'm going to be opening the doors to my signature coaching program, Hot Reels, which is my 12 month Instagram content lab. And so throughout the series, you're gonna hear me mention Hot Reels because these clients success stories came from inside that program. So if at any point you're thinking, okay, I love this, I want that kind of coaching and support, it would feel like such a relief and I would be so pumped to uh work with you and get inside.

03:28

I encourage you to hop on my VIP wait list right now because I keep the program intentionally small. I cap it at 20 business owners at a time in there because honestly, that's how I do my best work. And I'm gonna tell you more about that later in today's episode. But for now, if you know that you are committed to really growing your visibility and driving more leads and sales with your organic Instagram content, I invite you to take 30 seconds

03:57

04:53

And my gorgeous robot assistant will send you the link to join the wait list. But for now, let's talk about something I think almost every business owner gets wrong about Instagram growth. And honestly, I know this because I also had, and I want to be frank, the only reason why I understand the mistakes that business owners make on Instagram is because I have made all of the mistakes myself.

05:19

And so when I'm teaching you, just know that I'm coming from that place of I've absolutely been there. I've made all the mistakes so you don't have to. My goal is to shortcut your learning curve. And that's why I'm so passionate about this show and this work I get to do. So the piece that I see so many small business owners and entrepreneurs get stuck in is this belief that Instagram is just so hard and there's this...

05:43

resistance, like there's a stickiness when it comes to content creation and it's very emotionally loaded. And what I think is so interesting is that Instagram gets blamed for a lot of things it didn't actually do. You will see headlines that say, oh my gosh, know, reach is down or reels are dead or hashtags are dead or I've been shadow banned or the algorithm is impossible.

06:09

or organic reach doesn't work, you have to dance, you have to go viral, you have to post three times a day. I mean, there's all of these myths popping around and this clickbait, right? And every time I hear someone say these things, I just smile because I genuinely see something so different and I wanna bring you alongside me so you can be in my vibe of why I'm still so excited.

06:34

about the opportunity that is Instagram and growing a business in 2026. I think we are living in one of the greatest marketing opportunities small business owners have ever been given. And maybe that's because I was born in 1980. That's right, I'm disclosing my age publicly. This is so fun. I'm 45 years old. If you're trying to do the quick math, born in 1980. And I remember coming home from school.

07:03

and seeing those giant yellow page books sitting on our front porch. Do you guys remember those? And I remember flipping through them. And I don't know if I was in middle school, high school, who knows the year, I remember flipping through the yellow pages one day and looking for a nail salon. And there were page after page after page of nail salons, all just hoping and praying that someone would just pick them.

07:33

Right? A few of these nail salon companies had paid for an advertisement that took up a small amount of real estate on the page, but most of them just had their name, their phone number and address listed in tiny black ink. Okay? So let's go back. Imagine owning a business back in the eighties, right? Or even nineties. You just crossed your fingers and hoped that someone happened to choose your listing instead of the other 200 nail salons sitting on the exact same page.

08:03

That was marketing. Today, we carry something infinitely more powerful in our pockets. Instagram has over three billion monthly active users, and you better believe that your dream clients or customers are already there. And Marketing 101 is that you want to be present where your clients are hanging out, and that is Instagram, right? And they are scrolling while they're waiting in line for coffee.

08:31

They are scrolling when they're in the pickup line at school or on the couch after work. They're looking for home decoration ideas, inspiration, entertainment, right? Life feels stressful. They want to unplug. They're looking for solutions. Maybe they're like me where they have a neurodiverse kiddo that requires very different parenting than neurotypical solutions. So I gravitate toward content on Instagram that speaks to that.

09:00

piece, right? So the opportunity isn't convincing people to join Instagram, obviously, right? They're already there. The opportunity is learning how to position your content so you can earn their attention, right? And not only earn the attention of your ideal follower or client or customer, but learn how to keep attention, right? How to make them feel something because people don't buy

09:29

when they logically understand you or your product or service, they buy when they feel seen, when they feel understood. And that is why I love Instagram so much, is I don't think it's just a social media platform. It is one of the most powerful storytelling tools we've ever had as businesses. And OneReal, one of those short form videos, can pop off and introduce you to

09:58

hundreds, if not thousands, or even millions of people who had never heard of your business yesterday. It is incredible, the opportunity that we have. And I wanted to start this series with that reframe because I think it's easy to complain about, oh, I have to post content. And I want to just reframe it of, look at this opportunity that we have.

10:26

If we are willing to learn the skill, that is Instagram marketing. I also think that part of why I love Instagram so much is because of where I came from. So if you've been listening to this podcast for a while, you know that I spent over 20 years as a professional dancer for most of my life. My body was my voice. I didn't feel comfortable getting on camera and using my voice. If I wanted to express

10:54

something, I danced. was movement. Movement was my first language. And I wasn't the girl who loves speaking in front of people. I wasn't the person who loved hearing recordings of my own voice. It definitely made me cringe. But then Instagram Stories came along and something unexpected happened with the opportunity of showing my face in Instagram Stories and hitting that microphone button for this podcast. And

11:24

Really, through practice and reps, I started to find my voice, right? I started to talk and teach and I started sharing what I believed and what I had learned. And little by little, I became more comfortable showing up as my authentic self. Definitely in the beginning, I felt like a poser. It's like, I'll never forget my first Instagram story where I was like,

11:48

Hey guys, I wish by the way, don't do that. Don't speak to everyone, just speak to one person, but I didn't know that. So I'm like, hey guys, I just went to a yoga class and in my head I was thinking, this is so awkward. Like no one cares about your yoga class, right? But I just kept going little by little and then Reels came along and Instagram Reels of course were Instagram's way of, oh my gosh, TikTok was blowing up in 2020.

12:15

when we were all locked in our homes during COVID and toward the end of 2020 is when Instagram launched Reels, which was their version of those TikToks, right? Those short form videos. And when those came along, it was really cool. I definitely latched onto it as a former dancer because I saw that Reels gave me a stage again, right? There was something so joyful about creating movement and telling stories visually and playing with music and bringing ideas to life.

12:44

And for me, it felt super creative and playful. And I felt like I had found another outlet for a part of myself that had always existed, but had kind of dimmed because I had gone through postpartum depression with both of my babies and I was building businesses and I was trying to figure out all these different pieces. And I really started using Instagram Reels as just a part of my personal expression. And I think that's one of the reasons.

13:12

why I've been so successful with Reels is for me to do something, it has to be joyful or fun. Otherwise, I just won't do it. And maybe it's the ADHD in me. And so I love breaking the rules. I love testing. I love experimenting and playing. And I think one of the reasons I wasn't super attached to the outcome of the views or the likes, because remember, if you've heard my story, I posted a reel every single day.

13:41

for over a year with little to no growth, but I kept going. I reflect on that, like, how did I do that? Why did I keep going? And I think it is rooted in my background as a professional dancer because as dancers, we go into audition rooms and we get rejected constantly, right? You perform, you don't get the role. You audition again, you fall, you get back up. So when a reel would flop,

14:11

I just didn't take it that personally. I thought, ugh, okay, next, right? Next, what's my next one? And I think that mindset became one of the greatest gifts I could have as a small business owner and entrepreneur. It's definitely supported me, not only in my Instagram marketing efforts, but whole of my business growth efforts. I've been an entrepreneur for 16 years, and that's a mindset piece that I want to really start with and invite you into is,

14:39

instead of becoming obsessed or overly attached to each individual post, I want you to focus on what you can control, which is showing up and hitting posts and really refining the skills. Part of being a great Instagram marketer is becoming better at communicating and doing it in a really short form format.

15:03

Right? And it's a different skill set than writing a long form blog or a long form YouTube video, for example. Right? And so that was the game that I played and I continue to play. And my own personal commitment is just becoming better every single week. And that brings me to the biggest lesson I wanted to share with you to really kick off part one of this by part series.

15:30

is people ask me all the time, Elizabeth, what's the secret to growing on Instagram? And they're usually hoping I'm about to hand them some magical hack, a secret feature that they just need to go into their settings and turn on, or one particular content type that if they just did that, often they would grow or some sort of hidden algorithm trick. And listen, I love strategy, you know I love strategy, but if I'm telling you the absolute truth,

15:58

The biggest thing that changed my business wasn't one reel, it wasn't one hook, it wasn't a trend. It was deciding that I was going to become the kind of communicator my business deserves. It was deciding that this was a skill that I could do. Like if other people could figure this out, I could figure it out. And I would do what it would take. One of my business coaches once told me, Elizabeth, it takes what it takes.

16:26

And it's not the most sexy advice, right? We all want that quick dopamine hit and it's so fun when a video pops off. But the truth is it does. It takes what it takes. And what I now know, you know, looking back is that the videos that didn't perform well weren't wasted. That wasn't wasted effort. That was months where nothing was happening. Those months weren't wasted. Those weren't failures. Those were training ground. That's where I found my voice, where I learned how to tell better stories.

16:55

where I learned what resonated with my target audience. That's where I became the coach, the speaker, the marketer, the content creator I am today. And that's exactly why I want to share with you Asla's story, because what happened to her, it wasn't luck. It wasn't just a video that happened to pop off. It wasn't overnight. And it definitely wasn't because she found some magical Instagram hack.

17:21

It happened because she kept showing up long enough to become someone people wanted to keep listening to and following. Which brings me to Asla. She is one of my Hot Reels grads, and she's one of those people who reminds you that being incredible at what you do and being visible online are two completely different skills. So to give a little bit of context, Asla owns an incredible handmade gift.

17:49

She's built a seven figure Etsy business and she has more than 15,000 five star reviews on Etsy and she creates really beautiful custom pieces. In fact, I'm looking at on my desk right now, I have a beautiful custom picture frame that she made that says you were always enough. And then I have a photo of myself as a kid and it just like, keeps me going on those hard days when I look at that photo. So shout out to her. We'll definitely link her Etsy shop.

18:18

in the show notes. When she came into Hot Rails, it's not like she needed help at becoming better at the work she was doing, right? She was already a talented artist. She already had so much proof of concept, but she was getting stuck where so many business owners get stuck, in that we're spending years mastering our craft or we're building out on one particular platform like Etsy or another, you know, platform. And things are working until they stop working.

18:48

And then when we need to drive up sales, we're kind of frozen because nobody ever taught us as small business owners how to market ourselves, right? No one taught us how to become the face of our brand or how to communicate our value in a way that actually makes people stop scrolling and want to pay attention. And so sometimes we assume that the platform is the problem, right? Like Instagram is the problem.

19:18

But most of the time it isn't. The problem is that social media marketing and specifically that short form video is a completely different skill than the thing you actually sell, right? So when Asli joined Hot Reels, she had around 2,500 followers. She had been on social media for years, but she had mostly outsourced it. And then she stopped outsourcing it and her Instagram essentially went dormant.

19:46

for I believe a couple years before she came into the program. And so in her mind, she's like, is this account dead? You I haven't even been posting on it. She knew that she had grown a great audience on Etsy, but she really wanted to expand her presence of her products and her magic on Instagram. She understood that people don't just buy products anymore, right? They buy people, they buy stories, they buy personalities.

20:13

they buy from brands they feel connected to. And I actually interviewed Asla here on the podcast while she was in the middle of her Hot Reels journey. And before we talk about what happened, I want you to hear her describe where she started. I had a couple of other friends and coworkers that ran my social media for a few years. So I've been on Instagram and TikTok for a few years now.

20:38

And they did a great job, but it was just very like cookie cutter without me being involved in it at all. I wasn't viewed as a brand. So being in Hot Reels, it helped me view myself as more of a brand and position myself out there and get my messaging down pat. Like that's been huge for me because that helps me to show up in all these other ways of my business and even my life. So Osla just shared something that I want to flag because I think it's really important.

21:07

She said she wasn't viewed as a brand. And that sentence really stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard her say it because I think it's true for so many small business owners. You you have a business, you have expertise, you probably even have uh loads of happy clients. You have happy clients or customers, but are you building a brand? Those are not the same thing. A brand is what people remember.

21:32

when you're not in the room, like what you are known for. And a brand is how people feel when they see your content. A brand is the reason someone chooses your business over another business that technically offers the same service. And that doesn't happen by accident. It happens because you intentionally show up over and over again and you let people get to know you and your brand. And it's about

22:01

the positioning and the messaging and the strategy, right? And that's what Osla started doing. So here's the part of the story that a lot of people don't share because it's hard, right? But when someone sees the success story of 2,502, know, when Osla graduated the program, she had over 70,000 followers. They imagine this like beautiful upward linear growth chart.

22:27

Right, they imagine every reel performing better than the last each week. They imagine that once someone starts posting consistently, Instagram rewards them almost immediately, but that is not what happened, not even close. In fact, for months when she was inside a HotRails and she was doing all the things I was coaching, almost nothing happened kind of from the outside, right? So imagine doing exactly what your coach is telling you to do, showing up.

22:54

creating content, putting yourself out there, finding the courage to become the face of your business, and then watching your follower count barely move. So many people would interpret that as failure, right? People would think, oh, maybe Instagram just isn't for me, or maybe my niche is too saturated, maybe the algorithm hates me, maybe I'm wasting my time, maybe I'm shadow banned, right? All the excuses. But Osla kept going, and I want you to hear how she described that.

23:23

season. I actually just did the math last night because my husband asked me. we chat GPT the math. I have had 1500 % growth in my followers. Okay, so I joined the Hot Reels in July or August of last year. And I started implementing everything that you told me, but my follower count stayed pretty stagnant. I think I was within like 10 or 20 followers that entire time until December one morning at the gym. I'm just like, you know what?

23:50

F this, I'm just going to start posting content, but I'll put it on there as a trial reel, because that felt like another safety net for me. And I started just posting, posting consistently with your help. I found my voice, which changed a few times too. But once I found my voice, I was like, okay, we're just rolling with this. We're going to keep posting. And so December 6th, I was at 2,522 followers. And this morning I met over 40,000 followers. So this was in the middle of

24:18

Ozla's Hot Reels journey when she shared that. And I still get chills every time I hear her describe that because there's two different stories kind of happening inside that clip. The first one is obvious, right? She grew from around 2,500 followers to more than 40,000 by the time we recorded that interview. Today, she's at over 70,000, and that's incredible. But that's not the story that even fascinates me the most. The story that fascinates me is that everything that happened before anyone else noticed. Five months.

24:48

Right? Five months of showing up before the outside world started clapping for her. Five months of learning, practicing, experimenting, refining, finding her voice and believing in me as her mentor, right? To, okay, just tell me what to do. I'm gonna go do it I'm gonna go show up. And I'm gonna do it every week, week after week. And I'm gonna decide that I'm gonna build my confidence muscle, right? And that season is invisible to everyone else.

25:18

but it's where everything important happened. I think it's so easy when you are a small business center who's consuming Instagram coaches content, you know, or you're seeing other people's success stories is I think one of the parts of it that are hard is that of course, as Instagram coaches, we're sharing our clients success stories, but I think the lie is that success is sudden, right?

25:47

we see someone's account explode and we assume it happened overnight. And we don't see the hundreds of reels they created before that. We don't see the mornings where they questioned themselves or when they recorded that Instagram story or the reel and then they wanted, you know, they posted it, but they felt sick to their stomach because it felt so vulnerable. We don't see them showing up to the coaching calls. We don't see the revisions. We don't see the moments that they almost talk themselves out of posting the thing, right? We only see the breakthrough because

26:17

The breakthrough is the sexy part, right? And then we think that we're behind as small business owners. You are not behind. You're probably just in a plateau. And I want to challenge you to start thinking about that plateau differently. Like what if, you know, that feeling of stuckness or resistance or lack of growth isn't evidence that Instagram isn't working?

26:43

What if it's evidence that you're becoming the communicator your business needs you to become? The marketer your business needs you to become? Because that's what I watched happen with Osla and Hot Reels. Yes, her followers grew, but something much bigger happened. She stopped hiding behind her product. She started showing her face in her content. She found her voice in her messaging and her captions and how she was communicating about her products and the why behind what she does.

27:13

And she wasn't just attracting followers anymore, she was building trust and she was staying top of mind and her business was becoming more and more visible day after day. And when one of Oslo's reels eventually exploded and went super viral with millions and millions of views, her account was ready, right? If she had gone viral six months earlier, before she had clarity around messaging or before she had confidence in showing up on camera or before we had optimized her Instagram profile so it's clear what she did.

27:43

and who her products were for and how you could purchase them. And if that had happened before she built her brand, she wouldn't have converted nearly as many of those viewers into loyal followers, right? So that is where the groundwork of Hot Reels is so important, is understanding the foundation of you're not just posting content to post content. How does all of this connect into your lead and sales funnel for your business?

28:10

So the growth wasn't created by one viral reel. The viral reel revealed the foundation she'd spent months building. And I think that's such an important distinction because everyone wants that viral moment. It's so fun, but very few people are willing to build the foundation that allows them to capitalize on it. And that's what she did. And that's why her growth wasn't just impressive, it was sustainable.

28:34

When I asked Asa what she thought about Hot Reels or if she would recommend it, here's what she said. It has been literally the best investment ever. Like it has so paid for itself over and over again, just in the confidence that I've gained. I've purchased a lot of courses, like online courses, where you'll join a Zoom meeting every now and again. But this has been such a small container that I almost feel like it's one-on-one coaching. And you've helped me so much with just learning even

29:03

how to frame my questions and my thoughts around what I'm posting and who I'm trying to speak to. For me, it's hands down been worth every penny. The confidence that I've gained, even being able to have Zoom calls now and I can listen to replays and not want to puke from hearing my own voice. Just so much confidence and energetic work has gone into it too that you don't even think about. I feel like you can watch a YouTube video, you can Google how to

29:33

change positioning of text or whatever, but there is just so much mentally and emotionally that's gone in for me in Hot Reels that I wouldn't have been able to replicate anywhere else. So I love that Asla highlighted that she had purchased a lot of courses before, but this was a completely different vibe. And honestly, that's why I built and designed Hot Reels the way that I did. Sometimes people ask me, you know, why do you cap the program at 20 business owners?

30:02

And the answer is really simple because I don't want to run a membership where there are 500 people on a Zoom call and I don't know anyone's name. That has never been my dream. That has never been the kind of coach I wanted to be. And I've invested a lot in my own business and with coaches and mentors over the last seven years. I've bought courses. I joined memberships.

30:25

I have worked with coaches and when I look back at what actually changed my business and got me the best ROI, it wasn't the course I watched by myself on a Saturday afternoon or let's be frank, the course I bought and it collected dust in my inbox and I lost the login. It wasn't the membership where I could submit one question into a sea of hundreds of other comments and just hope it got answered.

30:50

The biggest breakthroughs in my business came because I was in close proximity to my coach and mentor, someone who really knew me, who knew my business, my offers, my audience, a coach who can look at something I created and immediately say, oh, that's not quite it, or this is brilliant, let's do more of this. And that kind of feedback is priceless.

31:11

I knew if I ever created a coaching program, that's what I wanted it to feel like. So when you join Hot Reels, I don't want you to become member number 147. I wanna know your business, your goals, your audience, your wins. I wanna know what you're launching. I wanna know what offer you're trying to fill because coaching is so much more effective when it's personal. And to me, Hot Reels has always felt much more like a mastermind than a traditional membership, right?

31:40

So yes, we are learning Instagram. I'm teaching you all of my content systems and strategies with reels, carousels, stories, messaging, positioning, how I'm baking AI into everything that we do because AI is an absolute game changer, not only for time and energy, but it'll help you get a better ROI out of your investment in HotRail. So AI is baked into everything I teach, but we're also solving like real business problems together because

32:10

Life happens, right? Your kids get sick or someone passes away or you lose a dog or things happen where it's like, it's so easy to get off the Instagram track and lose focus or get discouraged. And so there's so much mindset and energetic work that we do. And there's something really powerful about being in a room with other small business owners and entrepreneurs who are working toward the same goal. And that is, you know, the community aspect is another thing. So if you take nothing else away from today's episode, I hope you'll remember these three things. First, don't confuse a plateau, like a place where you feel like you're not growing with failure. Sometimes the quietest seasons are the ones where you're building the strongest foundation. And just because your follower count hasn't caught up yet doesn't mean your skills aren't growing every single time you create and hit post. Second, don't

practice in isolation. So one of the fastest ways to improve is to shorten that feedback loop. So instead of spending months wondering whether you're on the right track, find a mentor who can help you make those small adjustments along the way, those tiny refinements that will create a massive difference over time. And finally, remember that you're not just trying to grow an Instagram account. You're doing this to

grow your business and make that money or find that time freedom, energy freedom that you are after. And this platform is such a great opportunity to become a better communicator, to learn how to tell better stories, to discover how to connect with your ideal people in a deeper way and how to help your ideal clients feel understood. It is so much fun.

34:03

And those are the marketing skills that will serve you for the rest of your career, no matter what social platform comes next. So if today's episode resonated with you and you're thinking, oh my gosh, I don't wanna keep figuring this out by myself anymore, don't forget to join the Hot Reels wait list.
