S3 Ep112 Transcript - Why You Keep Overthinking Your Content (and How to Break the Cycle)
00:00
If you've been struggling to show up consistently on Instagram, I want you to hear this. It's probably not because you don't know what to post. There's something deeper going on and it's something I've been navigating myself recently too. So today's episode, we're gonna talk about it and really explore this visibility block that I see that prevents so many small business owners and creative entrepreneurs from getting seen and paid on Instagram. I hope you're ready. Let's go.
00:31
Welcome to Strut It, a podcast about creating bold visibility on social media with zero apologies. I'm Elizabeth Marberry, your host and Instagram marketing coach. I help small business owners get seen on Instagram and monetize their offers so they can make more money doing their sole lead work. If you're tired of spinning your wheels on Instagram and you're seeking simple, proven Instagram marketing strategies that actually work, you're in the right place.
01:00
Let's dive in.
01:11
Welcome back to the show. As always, I'm thrilled to spend the next few minutes with you. My goal every week is to simplify your Instagram marketing strategies so you can get seen by your ideal clients or customers and get paid for your soul-led work. I'm very passionate about what I do. And today, I wanted to do something a little bit different in this episode. So if you are a weekly listener, you know that
01:38
Typically, I'm giving you really tactical, actionable strategies, things you can go and implement right away to grow your business on Instagram. But there's a piece that I wanted to address in the show, which is that none of that actually works long term if you don't do the mindset and energetic work first. You might see momentum, right? You might be able to post for a week or two or even a few months.
02:08
But if this specific mindset piece isn't addressed, you will continue to struggle with consistency with your content on social media. So today I wanna talk about one of the biggest visibility blocks I see come up, not just for my clients inside of Hot Reels, my group coaching program, or my private clients, but for myself too. And my hope is that in today's show you feel seen.
02:36
and also encouraged to move through it. The visibility block I'm referring to is imposter syndrome. And I've been very much in it lately, okay? So at the end of this month, I'm speaking at Social Media Marketing World in Anaheim, California in a room that seats up to 2,500 people.
03:02
I'm so excited about this. It's the biggest speaking engagement of my career so far. And what feels really different about this room is that I'm not speaking to beginners this time around. I'm speaking to experienced marketers and people who have been doing social media marketing for a long time. And it's so interesting. I've noticed in designing my talk for social media marketing world that all these
03:32
thoughts have started to pop up for me. And I'm sure many of you can relate to these feelings where I noticed that the voice in my head is kind of telling me, well, what do I have to say that they don't already know? Or what if someone else in that room is more experienced than me? Or who am I to be on that stage? And it's been fascinating. I've really had to coach myself through it and
03:58
I've been blessed to work with several different speaker coaches through social media marketing world, which has been phenomenal. But I've really had to come back into this place of asking myself what is true. And the truth is, is that the CEO of social media examiner, Michael Stelzner, selected me for this conference. I earned my spot. I'm done proving myself, right? And
04:26
It's been a lot of internal work for me to support myself through that. Imposter syndrome also came up this week. I was at an event in the industry and I was talking to a wedding planner who I deeply respect. She is incredibly successful. She's been in the business, the wedding industry, much longer than me. And she's truly an icon in this space. And I was telling her,
04:53
that she would be such an incredible speaker and educator for the wedding industry. And it was so fascinating. She looked at me and she said, well, when I'm in rooms with people at my level, like other established planners and business owners, I start thinking, well, what do I even have to share that they don't already know? And I just smiled and said, you know what that is, right? And she smiled at me and she said, imposter syndrome.
05:22
And I was like, bingo, you got it. I share that with you because it doesn't matter what level you get to. I believe that when you are building a big life and you're pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you are going to become very familiar with this sensation of imposter syndrome, of like, what if I don't even know what I'm talking about? Like a little spiral, right?
05:49
I see imposter syndrome come up a lot when it comes to creating content on Instagram. And typically how it looks is this idea or this fear of what I wanna do or what I wanna create or what I wanna say has already been done. Why would anyone wanna hear what I have to say, right? Imposter syndrome can often come up in different ways, like sneaky ways where it's procrastination. Like you think, okay,
06:19
I just have to work harder on this thing before I actually put myself on camera, right? Or I have to do this course before I record a video, a direct-to-camera video of me talking to the camera. And it's kind of a way of avoiding it. There's some roots in that imposter syndrome energy of what if I don't know what I'm talking about? Or why would anyone care what I have to say?
06:44
or other people are already saying the thing I wanna say, but they're saying it even better than me, so why would I even start now, right? Like this comes up so often when it comes to Instagram content creation, and I just wanna normalize it. When I go onto Instagram and I'm scrolling, sometimes if I see other Instagram coaches or mentors in my space doing their work, I have the same thoughts. I'm like, oh my gosh, they just said the thing that I was thinking about posting about, right?
07:15
My invitation to you is there's times where it's good to put those blinders on and just be really mindful of what you do consume because you want to have like a clear energy field. You want to be very in tune with your own creativity and your own voice. And while it is definitely important to do research on Instagram to kind of see what's working and reverse engineer proven viral content types and all these things that I teach.
07:43
This is where, again, the mindset and energetic piece is so important, is that none of that's gonna work for you if you're in your own way, if you never post the content, right? So here's the refrain I wanna offer you today. Imposter syndrome is not proof that you're not ready, okay? It's actually proof that you're expanding. It shows up when you are living a big life, when you are going after your dreams,
08:12
when you are becoming more visible, when you are stepping into new rooms and pushing your edges. And if you don't understand that, you will interpret that voice of imposter syndrome as truth. And you'll make it mean, oh, I shouldn't post this, or I need more experience before I do X, or I'm not qualified enough yet, right? But that's not what's
08:42
happening. What's actually happening is your nervous system is being pushed outside of its comfort zone. I don't know if you know this, but in my past life, as many of you know, I'm a multi-bash entrepreneur. I became certified as a yoga teacher and I love yoga. Yoga is such a beautiful way for me to connect to myself and my heart and my spirit and breath work is just a total game changer for a very overactive ADHD brain that I have.
09:11
Anyway, I learned a lot about the nervous system and we have our parasympathetic nervous system, which is when we are in rest and digest. And then we have our sympathetic nervous system where we are in fight or flight. It's that feeling of, my gosh, a bear could come around the corner and attack me. And so many of us live our lives with our nervous systems being activated in that fight or flight, right? And so when
09:40
you are creating content and you feel that sense of imposter syndrome, it's actually your body. It's your nervous system saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, it's not safe for you to post this video of yourself talking to the camera, to the public, like something really bad could happen, right? It is literally your body just trying to keep you safe. How beautiful is that? Like, thank you body for keeping me safe. So that discomfort, it's not
10:09
a red flag. It's a sign that you're up leveling. Okay? And the truth is you don't need to say something that's never been said before. You just need to say it through your lens, your lived experience, your stories, your perspectives, the way you teach. Think about how I've structured this whole episode. I'm sharing a personal story of a struggle with imposter syndrome, right?
10:38
No one else can tell that story because it's my lived experience. It's my life. You have stories. You have your perspectives. You know what works. You know it doesn't work for you. And that is the thing that no one else can replicate. That is your edge. That is your it factor on Instagram. And this is exactly what I see happen on Instagram, right?
11:04
is people don't struggle because they don't know what to say or they don't know what to post. I mean, that's a part of it, right? But the bigger struggle is that they're questioning whether they're allowed to say it. So they overthink, they freeze, they stay quiet. And then they tell themselves that they need a better strategy when really they just need to get out of their own way and really identify what is actually happening in their bodies.
11:33
and understand that that is not truth, that voice that says no one cares what I have to say. The truth is that your voice matters and we need to hear from you. So here's what I want you to do after listening to this episode. Okay, this is your homework. I want you to notice the next time that voice comes up, the who am I to say this thought. And instead of spiraling, I want you to name it.
12:02
And just say to yourself, huh, okay, this is imposter syndrome. This is my nervous system, my body reacting to growth. And then I want you to post anyway. Say the thing anyway. Apply for what you want anyway. Share your perspective anyway. Because the faster you can move through that and take
12:32
action, the faster you will get seen and the faster you get seen, you'll get paid. And I believe, and I know this is very woo of me, but the more people who can live into their most authentic selves and serve their people through their products and services and sharing their voices and helping people solve problems, the better the world will be. So you get out of your own way, not only to get seen and get paid, but to serve.
13:02
and to make the planet a better place. So if after listening to this episode, you're realizing that this is the thing that's been holding you back, not your strategy, not your ideas, but this, I want you to know that this is exactly the kind of mindset and energetic work we do inside of Hot Reels, my 12 month Instagram content lab. Yes, we 100 % focus on strategy. Yes, I teach you what to post, how to create content that
